Punjab Adjusts School Timings Amid Cold Wave and Fog

In light of severe cold and dense fog affecting school children in Punjab, the state government has revised school timings instead of extending winter vacations. The new schedule aims to ensure children's safety while maintaining their education. Primary schools will now operate from 10 AM to 3 PM, while secondary schools will run until 3:20 PM. This decision follows concerns raised by parents and teachers regarding health risks posed by the weather. The arrangement will be reviewed after January 21, with further adjustments possible if conditions do not improve. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert, advising parents to remain vigilant about their children's safety.

New School Schedule in Punjab

New Delhi: Due to the severe cold wave and dense fog in Punjab, children heading to school in the early morning have been facing significant difficulties. In response, the state government has opted to modify school hours instead of extending winter vacations.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains stated that this practical measure was taken to ensure that children's education is not disrupted while also prioritizing their safety.

Government Directives

According to the government's directive, all government, aided, recognized, and private schools in the state must adhere to the new schedule. Primary schools will now operate from 10 AM to 3 PM, while secondary, higher, and senior secondary schools will follow a schedule from 10 AM to 3:20 PM. District education officers have been instructed to enforce this order strictly.

Decision Following Parental Concerns

In recent days, parents and teachers have been actively advocating for an extension of the holidays on social media, citing that the dense fog and cold pose health risks to children. Taking these concerns seriously, the government has chosen a middle ground by adjusting the school timings to ensure that education continues while minimizing risks.

Next Review Scheduled After January 21

The Education Minister clarified that this arrangement will remain in effect until Wednesday, January 21. After this date, the weather conditions will be reassessed. If the cold and fog persist, further adjustments to the schedule or additional measures may be considered.

IMD Issues Red Alert, Advises Caution

The Indian Meteorological Department has indicated that many districts in Punjab may continue to experience dense to very dense fog and cold wave conditions. Visibility is expected to be significantly reduced during the morning and night hours. Parents are advised to exercise extra caution regarding their children's safety.
