Training to Become an Architect

Atul Gupta emphasized that students must complete their Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics to pursue architecture. This is followed by a five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program. Admission to this program typically requires passing the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA), which is conducted three times annually. Only those who succeed in this exam can enroll in a college or university for their degree.

The curriculum encompasses various subjects, including design, drawing, 3D modeling, construction methods, and practical internships. Gupta compared this to other professions, noting that just as medical students train under experienced doctors and law students work with seasoned lawyers, aspiring architects must also gain experience under the mentorship of a senior architect for two to three years post-graduation. Income Potential and Government Projects

According to Atul Gupta, entry-level architects can expect to earn between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh per year. With three to five years of experience, this can rise to between ₹6 lakh and ₹12 lakh annually. In major cities and top firms, salaries can reach approximately ₹15 lakh. Notably, there is no ceiling on earnings for those who establish their own architecture firms or consultancies.

To secure government projects, architects must register with the Council of Architecture and set up their own firms. They should monitor tenders from various government bodies, development authorities, and public sector enterprises. Success in tender participation depends on experience, technical skills, and financial qualifications. Starting with smaller projects helps build a portfolio, enhancing the chances of winning larger government contracts.
