Odisha Government Introduces Free Education from KG to PG
Free Education Initiative in Odisha
In a groundbreaking move for the education sector, the Odisha government has announced that education will now be provided at no cost from Kindergarten (KG) all the way to Post-Graduation (PG). Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized that financial limitations should not obstruct any student's educational journey.
This initiative marks a significant advancement in ensuring that education is recognized as a fundamental right for every child in Odisha. The Chief Minister revealed that the state aims to be the first in India to implement such an extensive and entirely free educational framework.
During a press conference celebrating the two-year anniversary of his administration, the Chief Minister reiterated that no student should have their education interrupted due to financial issues. He stressed the importance of providing equal opportunities for all children to thrive.
Focus on Economically Disadvantaged Students
The Chief Minister highlighted that the most significant beneficiaries of this initiative will be children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many talented students often miss out on higher education due to the financial burden of tuition and other educational expenses. This new policy is expected to alleviate such pressures, enhancing the overall quality of education in the state and increasing access to colleges and universities. This, in turn, is anticipated to broaden educational outreach and improve future job prospects.
Achievements of the Government
In discussing his administration's accomplishments, the Chief Minister noted that 121 new development and welfare schemes have been launched in the past two years. These initiatives encompass various areas, including education, women's empowerment, support for the underprivileged, and infrastructure development. The government aims not only to introduce these schemes but also to ensure their effective implementation to benefit the populace. The free education initiative is a key component of this vision.
Other states have also introduced similar free education policies. For instance, the Kerala government announced free education up to the undergraduate level in government and aided colleges during the budget session in January 2026, expanding from the previous limit of Class 12. In Tamil Nadu, free education for BA, BSc, and BCom students in government and aided colleges has been in place since the 2007-08 academic year.
Additionally, the Maharashtra government is set to launch a scheme in the 2024-25 academic year to waive fees for higher and professional education for women from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and OBC categories, targeting families with an annual income below ₹8 lakh.
