NIT Rourkela's Remarkable Rise in Rankings


Rourkela: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Rourkela has made a significant leap in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings for 2026, moving up to the 186th position from last year's 191st. This advancement highlights its reputation as one of Asia's premier educational institutions.


The rankings evaluated a total of 929 universities across 36 different countries and regions. Within India, NIT Rourkela secured the eighth position, making it the top-ranked NIT in the country and the only one to break into the top 200 this year. Director K Umamaheshwar Rao attributed this success to the institute's commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and international collaboration.


He acknowledged the contributions of the accreditation and ranking team in achieving this milestone, emphasizing that it would motivate further initiatives to enhance research partnerships and the overall academic environment. The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings utilize 18 performance metrics that encompass teaching quality, research output, knowledge transfer, and global perspective.
