Recall of 'Exploring Society: India and Beyond - Part 2'

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced a recall of the Class 8 social science textbook titled "Exploring Society: India and Beyond - Part 2." The organization has requested that anyone in possession of this book return it without delay. This action follows a significant controversy that led the Supreme Court to impose a total ban on the book.

In a media advisory, NCERT urged all copies of the book to be returned to the Department of Education (DESS) or the Publications Division located at its headquarters on Sri Aurobindo Marg in New Delhi as soon as possible. Additionally, it has requested the immediate removal of any content related to the chapter titled "The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society" from social media and digital platforms, reiterating that the book has been officially withdrawn.

Supreme Court's Directive

On February 26, the Supreme Court issued a complete prohibition on the publication, printing, sale, and online distribution of the book. The court instructed the central government to enforce this order immediately and halt both physical and digital circulation.

On February 25, the court took suo motu cognizance and issued a show-cause notice to the NCERT Director and the Secretary of the School Education Department, demanding an explanation as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them.

The central government informed the court that 32 copies of the book had been sold and were now being recalled. In response, the Ministry of Education directed the Ministry of Electronics and IT, along with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, to cease digital circulation and provide an action report by February 27, enabling a compliance affidavit to be submitted to the court.

The court also mandated action against individuals involved in the book's preparation. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has assured that accountability will be established and appropriate measures will be taken.
