Madhya Pradesh Extends Teacher Summer Break Amid Heatwave
Impact of Extreme Heat on Education
The relentless heat in Madhya Pradesh continues to pose challenges, with temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius in several districts, significantly affecting daily life. In response to this situation, the state government has made a crucial decision regarding the education sector.
Extended Summer Break for Teachers
The School Education Department has announced an extension of the summer vacation for teachers. This decision was made considering the current weather conditions and the health of educators. However, there will be no change in the reopening date for students.
Schools Set to Reopen on June 16
Reports indicate that schools in Madhya Pradesh will resume on June 16. According to the announcement from the School Education Department, the government has extended the summer break for teachers by an additional seven days due to the extreme heat. Teachers are now expected to return to schools on June 7 instead of June 1, a decision influenced by the soaring temperatures.
Severe Heat and Its Effects
The education department shared a circular on its official Twitter account, stating, 'The state is currently experiencing severe heat and heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in many districts. Teachers are also engaged in census and board examination-related tasks during the summer.'
The extension was granted with the well-being of teachers and the prevailing weather conditions in mind. The notification specifies that the summer break for teachers will now last from May 1 to June 7, 2026.
Holidays for Festivals
As per the official order, holidays for festivals such as Dussehra, Diwali, and winter breaks will remain unchanged. With schools reopening, the second phase of the 'School Chalen Hum' campaign will also commence on June 16 and run until June 30. This initiative aims to ensure enrollment for all eligible children and to bring back students who have dropped out.
The School Education Department has instructed officials to ensure timely distribution of textbooks before the new academic session begins. They are also tasked with completing online data entry related to textbooks, gathering feedback on book quality, and addressing pending tasks related to co-location of primary schools with Anganwadi centers.
