JEE Main 2026: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the timeline for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main. Registration for the first session of JEE Main 2026 commenced on October 31 and will remain open until November 27. The initial session is set to take place from January 21 to January 30, 2026, while the second session is scheduled for April 1 to April 10, 2026. Each year, approximately 100,000 candidates participate in JEE Main. A common question arises: how are rankings established when candidates achieve identical JEE Main scores?

Importance of JEE Main Scores

The JEE Main exam is crucial for securing admission into engineering institutions nationwide. Rankings are primarily based on JEE Main scores, influencing the admission process into various engineering colleges. A higher rank typically correlates with access to more prestigious branches and institutions.


Only those who rank within the top 250,000 in JEE Main qualify to take the JEE Advanced exam. The highest achievers in JEE Advanced gain entry into IITs and NITs.


Ranking Determination for Tied Scores

How Rankings are Established for Tied Scores:


In cases where candidates have identical JEE Main scores, the NTA employs a specific formula to determine their rankings. The scoring system prioritizes the mathematics score, followed by physics. If both mathematics and physics scores are equal, a predetermined order is used to resolve ties. The ranking criteria are as follows:


  • JEE Main Mathematics Score


  • JEE Main Physics Score


  • JEE Main Chemistry Score


  • Candidates with a lower ratio of correct to incorrect answers across all subjects are prioritized.


  • Candidates with a lower ratio of correct to incorrect answers in Mathematics are prioritized.


  • Candidates with a lower ratio of correct to incorrect answers in Physics are prioritized.


  • Candidates with a lower ratio of correct to incorrect answers in Chemistry are prioritized.



If candidates' scores remain tied after these criteria, they will receive the same rank.
