Jammu and Kashmir Government Increases Medical Internship Stipend

In a significant move, the Jammu and Kashmir government has raised the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns to ₹25,000, more than doubling the previous amount of ₹12,300. This decision comes after persistent demands from medical interns, who had previously gone on strike to advocate for better financial support. The increase will benefit numerous interns across the Union Territory, including foreign medical graduates, effective from October 1st. This adjustment marks a crucial step in addressing the financial needs of medical interns in the region.

Significant Stipend Increase for Medical Interns

Medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir have long advocated for higher stipends. In response to these ongoing requests, the government has announced a substantial increase in the stipend for MBBS and BDS interns, which also includes foreign medical graduates within the Union Territory.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has made a notable enhancement to the financial support for medical interns. Following continuous appeals for a stipend raise, the government has decided to more than double the monthly allowance for MBBS and BDS interns, including those from abroad. An official notification from the Health and Medical Education Department at the Civil Secretariat confirms this increase.

Details of the Stipend Increase

According to the official order from the Health and Medical Education Department, MBBS and BDS interns, including foreign medical graduates, will now receive a monthly stipend of ₹25,000, a significant rise from the previous amount of ₹12,300. This adjustment will take effect from October 1st, as per the directives outlined in the Finance Department’s U.O. No. FD-Code/69/2026-AO-1068 (dated October 20, 2026).

Background of the Demand

The call for a stipend increase by medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir has been ongoing for quite some time. In September, they staged a strike to emphasize their demands. Following this, on September 8th, the government urged them to end their protest, assuring that their requests would be reviewed within a month. After a month of waiting, the interns resumed their strike on Tuesday, declaring that their indefinite protest would persist until a formal government order was issued to raise their stipends. Ultimately, on October 21, the government responded positively to their demands and issued the stipend increase order.

Impact on Interns

This decision by the Jammu and Kashmir government is set to benefit numerous MBBS and BDS interns currently completing their internships at government medical colleges and affiliated hospitals in the region. The increase will also extend to foreign medical graduates. Previously, interns received a stipend of ₹12,300, which has now been raised by ₹12,700, marking an approximate increase of 103.25 percent. With this adjustment, medical interns in Jammu and Kashmir will now earn a monthly stipend of ₹25,000.
