Exam Pattern Changes
Major Change in Exam Pattern
A significant aspect of the SSC CGL 2026 is the newly introduced exam pattern. For the first time, sectional timing has been implemented, meaning candidates cannot allocate extra time to any section at their discretion. The Tier-1 exam will consist of 100 questions to be completed in 60 minutes, with 25 questions in each of the four sections. Candidates will have precisely 15 minutes for each section, after which the screen will automatically transition to the next section. This change aims to assess candidates' readiness and proficiency across all subjects uniformly.
Subjects Covered in Tier-1
Which subjects will be covered in Tier-1?
The Tier-1 exam will be entirely Computer-Based (CBT) and will include 100 questions across General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude (Mathematics), and English Comprehension. Each section will have a 15-minute time limit, and a negative marking of 0.50 will be applied for incorrect answers.
Sectional Timing in Tier-2
Sectional Timing to Apply in Tier-2 as Well
Time limits will also be enforced for the Tier-2 exam. In Section-1 of Paper-1, candidates will have 30 minutes for 30 Mathematics questions and another 30 minutes for 30 Reasoning questions. Additionally, 40 minutes will be allocated for 45 questions on English Language & Comprehension, 20 minutes for 25 General Awareness questions, and 15 minutes for 20 questions in the Computer Knowledge section. Previously, candidates could manage their time across sections, but this flexibility will no longer be available.
Exam Schedule
When will the exam be held?
The tentative schedule indicates that the Tier-1 Computer-Based Exam is set for August-September 2026, followed by the Tier-2 examination for successful candidates in December 2026.
Selection Process
What is the selection process?
The recruitment will occur in two stages. Initially, candidates must take the Tier-1 examination. Based on their scores, candidates will be shortlisted for Tier-2. The final merit list will be determined by performance in the Tier-2 examination.
Final Merit List Preparation
How will the final merit list be prepared?
The SSC has clarified that the final selection will depend solely on Tier-2 performance. For general posts, the merit list will be based on marks from Section-1 and Section-2 of Paper-1, while qualifying the Computer Knowledge Test and Data Entry Speed Test will be mandatory. For positions like Junior Statistical Assistant (JSA) and Statistical Inspector, marks from Paper-2 (Statistics) will also be included. Similarly, for Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) and Assistant Accounts Officer (AAO) roles, marks from Paper-3 (General Accounts, Finance, and Accounting) will factor into the final merit list.
