Indian Railways has successfully appointed 43,781 candidates during the fiscal year 2025-26. Furthermore, the recruitment process for more than 55,000 positions is advancing swiftly, with final selections anticipated within the next few months to a year. In this regard, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a review of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) recruitment process. He stressed the importance of enhancing transparency, accountability, and technology integration in the recruitment system. Officials were directed to ensure that the recruitment process is entirely merit-based, user-friendly, and dependable for candidates.

During the review, the Railway Minister highlighted that Indian Railways is committed to modernizing its recruitment approach. He mentioned that departmental examinations are now conducted entirely through Computer-Based Tests (CBT). Additionally, officials have been instructed to implement a tablet-based examination system wherever feasible. The Minister believes that leveraging technology will expedite the recruitment process, enhance accuracy, and improve transparency. This shift is expected to shorten the time taken to announce results and provide a better experience for candidates, as the digital system is proving effective in reducing delays.
Employment Opportunities in 2025-26
Employment for Over 43,000 People in a Year
In the fiscal year 2025-26, Indian Railways completed recruitment across six major categories. A total of 47,084 positions were advertised, with 43,781 candidates appointed. The majority of appointments were for Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) and Technician roles. Out of 18,799 vacancies for ALP, 17,193 candidates were successfully employed. In the Technician category, 13,416 candidates were selected from 14,298 available posts. Significant recruitment also occurred for the Railway Protection Force (RPF), with 450 out of 452 Sub-Inspector positions filled, and 4,205 candidates appointed from 4,208 Constable vacancies. Additionally, 7,333 candidates were selected for 7,951 positions in Junior Engineer (JE), DMS, and CMA categories, while recruitment was completed for 1,184 of the 1,376 advertised posts for paramedical staff.

The Railway Recruitment Board is recognized as one of the largest recruitment agencies in India. Railway examinations are conducted in numerous cities and hundreds of centers nationwide, attracting lakhs of candidates. To facilitate participation, exams are offered in 15 languages, allowing youth from various states to take the test in their preferred language. Given the extensive nature of the recruitment process, exams are organized in multiple shifts.

Several Major Recruitment Processes Still Underway
Several significant recruitment exams organized by the Railway Recruitment Board have already been conducted, with document verification and final selection processes currently in progress. Ongoing recruitment includes 8,113 NTPC Graduate-level positions, 3,445 NTPC Undergraduate-level roles, 1,036 Ministerial and Isolated category posts, 6,238 Technician positions, and 434 Paramedical category roles. Railway officials have indicated that document verification has started for several categories, while final results for others will be announced shortly. Following this, appointment letters will be distributed to the selected candidates.
Future Recruitment Plans
Final selection for over 55,000 posts to take place soon
During a recent review meeting, the Railway Minister inquired about recruitment efforts where final selections are expected within the next six months to a year. Currently, a recruitment process for 55,229 positions is active within the Railways. The largest segment consists of 32,438 vacancies for Level-1 posts. Additionally, the recruitment includes 10,970 positions for Assistant Loco Pilots, 368 for Section Controllers, 2,585 for Junior Engineers, DMS, and CMA, 5,810 for NTPC Graduate-level roles, and 3,058 for NTPC Undergraduate-level positions. The Railways anticipates that completing these recruitments will address the increasing demands.
