Introduction to IIT Scholarships

For countless students across India, gaining admission to an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a significant aspiration. While many dedicate themselves to excelling in competitive exams such as JEE Advanced, GATE, and JAM, the rewards of achieving high ranks go beyond just securing a spot. Numerous IITs provide generous scholarships and fellowships to their top-performing students. The specifics of these financial aids differ; some institutions offer annual support worth several lakhs based on JEE Advanced results, while others grant monthly fellowships reaching up to ₹90,000 for outstanding GATE rankers pursuing PhD programs. In this regard, IIT Kharagpur has introduced a special fellowship in celebration of its Platinum Jubilee. Additionally, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Delhi are also extending financial support to deserving students through various initiatives.

IIT Kharagpur's Special Fellowship

IIT Kharagpur is commemorating its 75th anniversary this year. To celebrate this milestone, the institute is hosting various events that showcase its contributions to education, research, and innovation. As part of these festivities, IIT Kharagpur has initiated the 'Director Platinum Jubilee Excellence Fellowship' (DPEF 2026). This fellowship is designed to motivate candidates who have excelled in national-level entrance exams to pursue advanced education and research. Candidates who rank within the top 50 in GATE 2026 and choose to pursue a PhD at IIT Kharagpur are eligible for this financial aid. Selected individuals will receive ₹80,000 monthly for the first two years, which will increase to ₹90,000 per month for the subsequent three years, contingent upon meeting all PhD admission criteria at IIT Kharagpur. There is no separate application process for this fellowship; eligible candidates can apply through the ongoing PhD admission process.

Additional Benefits for JAM Rankers

The DPEF scheme at IIT Kharagpur is not exclusive to GATE rankers. Candidates who achieve ranks between 1 and 50 in JAM 2026 can also benefit from this initiative, provided they enroll in a master's program at IIT Kharagpur. Thus, in honor of its Platinum Jubilee, IIT Kharagpur has broadened its merit-based financial assistance to include top performers in both GATE and JAM, with the fellowship for PhD studies reaching up to ₹90,000 monthly.

IIT Kanpur's Bright Minds Scholarship

IIT Kanpur also provides substantial financial support to students who excel in JEE Advanced. The 'Bright Minds Scholarship' is a prominent merit-based scholarship awarded to the top 100 rankers in the JEE Advanced All India Rankings who enroll in IIT Kanpur's B.Tech or B.S. programs. Recipients of this scholarship receive ₹3 lakh annually, which can be sustained throughout the four-year undergraduate program, provided they maintain a minimum CPI of 8.0 each year. According to reports, out of the ₹3 lakh, ₹2 lakh is allocated for tuition fees, while the remaining ₹1 lakh covers hostel, mess, books, medical insurance, and other living expenses. This initiative aims to ensure that financial barriers do not impede the education of high-achieving students.

IIT Roorkee's James Thomason Scholarship

IIT Roorkee offers a special scholarship for top JEE Advanced rankers known as the James Thomason Scholarship. This scholarship is available to students who achieve an All India Rank (AIR) of up to 250 in JEE Advanced and enroll at IIT Roorkee. Under this program, students receive ₹25,000 monthly for the duration of their studies, contingent upon maintaining good academic performance with a CGPA of 8.0 or higher each year.

IIT Delhi's Endowment for Top Students

IIT Delhi has received a generous endowment of ₹10 crore from alumnus Dr. Amit Sinha, aimed at establishing full-ride fellowships for the top five undergraduate students based on JEE Advanced rankings who enroll each year. Among these fellowships, one is specifically reserved for the highest-ranking female JEE candidate, promoting women's participation in STEM fields. This initiative reflects IIT Delhi's commitment to supporting merit, financial need, and enhancing female representation in science and technology.
