IIT Kharagpur Introduces New Admission Criteria for B.Tech and B.Sc Programs
New Admission Pathways at IIT Kharagpur
IIT Kharagpur, recognized as one of India's premier technical institutions, is set to implement a revised admission strategy for its B.Tech and B.Sc programs starting from the next academic year. This new approach will allow students to gain admission based on their achievements in Olympiads and sports, rather than relying solely on their JEE Advanced exam rank.
Suman Chakraborty, the Director of IIT Kharagpur, announced that the Senate has approved this initiative, which will introduce alternative admission routes while maintaining the JEE Advanced exam as a requirement, albeit without its rank being the sole criterion for acceptance.
Chakraborty stated, "We are exploring various options, including Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) and Science Olympiad Excellence Admission (SCOPE). However, the final guidelines are still under discussion."
The main goal of this new admission framework is to enhance diversity among students and to create opportunities for talented individuals from various backgrounds.
Several other IITs, including IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Indore, have already adopted similar policies that recognize achievements in Olympiads and sports, and IIT Kharagpur is following suit.
Reports indicate that a committee comprising representatives from each department will be established to define the admission process and ensure its effective implementation. This committee will analyze the admission protocols of other IITs to formulate a suitable model.
The proposed Olympiad events include prestigious international competitions such as the International Mathematics Olympiad, International Physics Olympiad, International Chemistry Olympiad, International Biology Olympiad, and International Informatics Olympiad. Additionally, there may be provisions for extra seats for students excelling in national and international Olympiads.
