Discover how IIT Delhi is committed to fostering a healthier campus atmosphere.

IIT Delhi's Commitment to Student Mental Health

New Initiatives for Student Welfare: In a proactive move to enhance the mental well-being of its students, IIT Delhi has announced a series of reforms aimed at protecting student rights. This initiative comes in response to a high-level inquiry committee's recommendations following the unfortunate passing of a student, Rishikesh Kumar, in August 2026. The institute plans to hire more psychologists and counselors and appoint an independent 'Grievance Redressal Ombudsman' to handle student complaints, thereby fostering a secure and transparent campus environment.

Confidential Report from Inquiry Committee

Chaired by a Retired Judge: The inquiry committee, led by Justice Mukta Gupta, a former judge of the Delhi High Court, included a senior expert from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and two student representatives. The committee has mandated that its findings remain confidential, which has led to the institute not disclosing specific details. However, IIT Delhi has indicated that the committee's recommendations are centered on enhancing mental health support systems and improving institutional frameworks.

Implementation of Recommendations

Formation of an Internal Committee: To implement the recommendations, IIT Delhi has set up an internal committee comprising key officials including the Deputy Director (Operations), the Dean of Student Affairs, and student representatives. This committee is tasked with reviewing the external committee's recommendations and creating an actionable plan for their execution.

Action Plan Communication

Engagement with Students and Faculty: On October 31, IIT Delhi communicated the recommendations and action plan to students, faculty, and staff. A discussion was held during a Student Affairs Council meeting on November 3, where student feedback was actively sought and integrated into a structured action plan. The institute aims to recruit additional full-time clinical psychologists and counselors, as well as increase the number of visiting psychiatrists for expert consultations.

Awareness and Training Initiatives

Focus on Mental Health Awareness: The institute plans to launch extensive awareness campaigns addressing mental health issues and substance abuse laws. Workshops on empathetic communication and mental health topics will be mandatory for administrative and faculty staff.

Support for Students Returning from Leave

Framework for Reintegration: IIT Delhi is establishing a formal support system for students returning from extended leaves. This initiative will provide specialized counseling and academic coordination to help these students reintegrate smoothly into their studies. A peer support network will also be created to assist them in adjusting back to campus life.

Strengthening Grievance Mechanisms

Independent Ombudsman Appointment: The institute will appoint an independent grievance redressal ombudsman and conduct a thorough review of its mental health support system and welfare policies. A new committee will be formed, including mental health experts and student representatives, to evaluate existing systems and recommend improvements.

Commitment to a Supportive Campus Environment

IIT Delhi aims to cultivate a campus atmosphere characterized by empathy, transparency, and collaboration. The institution emphasizes that these reforms are not just modifications to existing policies but are significant steps toward prioritizing student well-being and enhancing the institutional framework.
