IIT Bombay Proposes New Examination Protocols Following Student Tragedy

IIT Bombay is set to revise its examination protocols in light of the tragic suicide of student Sahil Wakode. Proposed changes aim to provide students with a fair chance during exams, even if suspected of cheating. An 8-member committee has recommended new procedures, including allowing students to continue their exams and ensuring they can present their side of the story. The new rules also emphasize immediate support from the QRT helpline. However, the implementation of these changes is currently on hold, with the previous 2015 regulations reinstated temporarily. This article delves into the details of the proposed revisions and their implications for students.

Introduction to Revised Examination Rules

In response to the tragic incident involving student Sahil Wakode, IIT Bombay is set to revise its examination protocols. The proposed changes aim to provide students with a fair chance during exams, even if they are suspected of cheating. These interim suggestions are designed to create a more supportive environment for students facing allegations of misconduct.

Committee Recommendations

The recommendations for the revised examination rules stem from an 8-member committee, which includes four faculty members and four students. This committee was formed following the unfortunate suicide of Sahil Wakode, a second-year B.Tech student, on September 18. Their interim report was presented during a special Senate meeting at IIT Bombay.

Procedures for Suspected Cheating

According to the proposed protocols, if an invigilator suspects a student of cheating, they will confiscate any suspicious materials. The student will then be provided with a new answer booklet to continue their exam. The invigilator will document the incident thoroughly to ensure transparency.

Role of the Disciplinary Action Committee

Once a cheating incident is reported, the invigilator's responsibility ends, and the Disciplinary Action Committee will take over. The proposed rules guarantee that the accused student has the opportunity to present their case, with their statement recorded in the presence of staff.

Immediate Notification to QRT

The new rules also require that the QRT helpline be notified immediately after the exam concludes, ensuring that the student is not left unsupported following the incident.

Temporary Suspension of New Rules

IIT Bombay had recently introduced stricter penalties for cheating, replacing the 2015 regulations. However, these new rules have been temporarily suspended, and the 2015 guidelines have been reinstated. The previous rules imposed a one-grade reduction for carrying a mobile phone into the exam hall, while the new rules proposed harsher penalties, including a semester suspension for such offenses.
