IIIT Introduces New MTech-PhD Dual Degree Programs in Emerging Fields

The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is preparing to launch two new dual degree programs combining MTech and PhD studies in Biomedical Analytics and Quantum Information. Set to begin in the 2027-28 academic year, these programs will allow students to transition from MTech to PhD while engaging in research. With a total of 40 seats available, admissions will be based on GATE scores. The Senate has approved the curriculum, pending final endorsement from the Board of Governors. This initiative aims to equip students with expertise in rapidly evolving technical fields.

Introduction of Dual Degree Programs

The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is set to unveil two innovative MTech-PhD dual degree programs that blend academic coursework with research initiatives. The proposed fields of study include 'Biomedical Analytics and Engineering' and 'Quantum Information and Technology.' These programs will be managed by the Department of Applied Sciences, with plans for admissions to commence in the academic year 2027-28. Importantly, entry into these courses will rely on GATE scores, allowing students to transition from MTech to PhD while engaging in research in cutting-edge technical domains.

Admission Timeline and Approval Process

The institute aims to initiate admissions for these programs in the 2027-28 academic session. The proposal has been submitted to the Board of Governors for final endorsement, having already received approval from the Senate.

PhD Research Opportunities

**Pathway to PhD Research**
A significant aspect of these dual degree programs is the opportunity for students to pursue PhD research concurrently with their MTech studies. The proposed framework allows students to complete MTech coursework in the first year, after which they can enroll in the PhD program and start their research in their selected area. Scholarships are anticipated for students during their initial MTech year, with additional research scholarships available as they progress to the PhD level.

Admission Capacity

**40 Seats Available**
The institute plans to offer a total of 40 seats across both programs, with 15 seats allocated for 'Biomedical Analytics and Engineering' and 25 for 'Quantum Information and Technology.' Admission will be determined based on GATE scores, providing engineering and science graduates the chance to specialize in these rapidly advancing fields.

Senate Approval

**Senate Endorsement**
The proposed curriculum for both programs was presented by the Department of Applied Sciences to the Senate, which has granted its approval. The final step is obtaining the Board of Governors' endorsement to officially launch these programs. Once approved, the admission process for the M.Tech-PhD programs could commence in the 2027-28 academic year.
