The Central Cabinet has sanctioned the establishment of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in civil regions to address the increasing demand for quality education among the children of central government employees. This initiative is designed to improve educational access, particularly in districts that previously lacked KVs.

- Beneficiary Students: Approximately 86,640 students are anticipated to benefit from these 57 new KVs.
- Financial Investment: The initiative will require a budget of ₹5,862 crore, with a phased rollout planned over the next nine years.
- Targeted Areas:
- 14 schools will be established in aspirational districts.
- 4 schools will be set up in Naxal-affected regions.
- 5 schools will be located in North-Eastern or hilly regions.

For the first time, the pre-primary stage (Balvatika) will be incorporated into the newly approved KVs as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, offering a three-year foundational program to ensure early quality education for children.

- Existing Schools: Currently, India has 1,288 Kendriya Vidyalayas serving around 13.62 lakh students.
- Job Creation: The establishment of these new schools is expected to generate over 4,600 permanent jobs.
- Historical Background: The Kendriya Vidyalaya scheme was first approved in November 1962 to cater to the children of central government employees who are frequently transferred, including defense and paramilitary personnel. Subsequently, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) was formed under the Ministry of Education.

As part of the NEP 2020, 913 KVs have been recognized as PM Shri Schools, establishing them as exemplary institutions aimed at promoting high educational standards nationwide.
