A unique aspect of IISERs is their emphasis on integrating research, laboratory work, and projects into the academic experience.

Let's delve into the admission procedures at IISERs, the courses they provide, and the number of IISERs across the nation.

Available Courses at IISERs

IISERs primarily offer a five-year BS-MS (dual degree) program. Some institutions also provide integrated PhD and PhD programs. The BS-MS course is tailored for students eager to engage in research across various scientific fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and earth sciences.

Eligibility Criteria

Students who have completed their 12th grade in the science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Biology) are eligible to apply to IISER. The BS-MS program commences directly after 12th grade, eliminating the need for a separate undergraduate degree.

Admission Process

There are three pathways for admission to IISER:

  1. IISER Aptitude Test (IAT): This is the most prevalent route. Candidates must have completed their 12th grade and subsequently take the IAT exam.

  2. JEE (Advanced) Channel: Students who qualify for the JEE Advanced examination can also secure admission to IISER.

  3. KVPY Channel: Previously, students with KVPY scholarships were eligible for admission; however, other valid test scores are now accepted.

Number of IISERs in India

Currently, there are seven IISERs functioning in India, which include IISER Pune, Kolkata, Mohali, Bhopal, Trivandrum, Tirupati, and Behrampur.
