Diwali School Holidays Announced Across Various States in India
Schools Across States Begin Diwali Breaks — Check Complete Holiday Schedule
As the festive season unfolds in India, numerous state governments have officially declared Diwali school holidays for both students and educators. States including Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar have released distinct schedules, with holiday durations varying from several days to nearly two weeks, influenced by local events and festivals like Diwali and Chhath Puja.
Here’s a detailed overview of the holiday schedules by state and the rationale behind them.
Karnataka: Schools Closed from October 8 to 18 for Statewide Survey
In Karnataka, the festive break has commenced, but for a unique reason. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced that all schools will be closed from October 8 to 18, 2025, to support the ongoing social and educational census, commonly referred to as the caste survey.
This decision allows teachers and administrative staff to engage in the data collection process. Some districts, such as Koppal, have already achieved 97% completion of the survey, while Udupi and Dakshina Kannada are still working towards completing around 60% of the tasks. Teachers involved in mid-term examinations are exempt from survey responsibilities.
This extended break provides a pause for students and educators ahead of the upcoming Diwali festivities.
Rajasthan: 12-Day Diwali Vacation from October 13 to 24
The Rajasthan Education Department has announced a 12-day holiday for schools from October 13 to October 24, 2025. This decision ensures that both students and teachers have ample time to celebrate Diwali and enjoy quality moments with their families.
This year, the Diwali celebrations are anticipated to bring vibrant cultural activities to schools once classes resume. The extended break aligns with Rajasthan’s tradition of generous holidays during major festivals.
Uttar Pradesh: Shorter Diwali Break from October 20 to 23
In Uttar Pradesh, the Diwali holidays will commence slightly later than in other states. Schools will be closed from October 20 to October 23, with the weekend holidays (October 18–19) extending the total break to six days.
The education department has structured the schedule to minimize academic disruption while allowing students to enjoy the festive season with their families.
Bihar: Combined Break for Diwali and Chhath Puja
In Bihar, schools will remain closed from October 20 onwards, merging the breaks for Diwali and Chhath Puja into a single extended vacation. Chhath Puja, a significant festival in the state, follows closely after Diwali, and the government has synchronized the schedule to accommodate both celebrations.
This approach is expected to facilitate travel for families and teachers returning to their hometowns for the festivities.
Other States Likely to Follow
In light of these announcements, several other states are anticipated to release their Diwali vacation schedules shortly. States such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra may also issue similar notifications within the week, promoting uniformity in festive breaks across educational institutions.
The Festive Spirit Returns to Schools
After months of regular classes and examinations, the announcement of Diwali holidays has sparked excitement among students. For educators, this break presents a much-needed chance to recharge before the new academic term resumes in late October.
From survey duties in Karnataka to traditional festivities in Bihar, each state is celebrating this season uniquely — yet the underlying message remains the same: Diwali is a time for joy, togetherness, and new beginnings.
