Delhi University to Invest ₹5,889 Crore in New Hostels for Students
Expansion of Residential Facilities at Delhi University
Delhi University (DU) is set to enhance its residential facilities by constructing new hostels, with an investment of ₹5,889 crore. This initiative aims to accommodate 21,895 students. The proposal received approval during the 284th Executive Council (EC) meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh. He emphasized that the designs for these new hostels will cater to the needs of the 21st century.
Prof. Singh highlighted that the conditions under which the previous hostels were established differ significantly from future expectations, prompting a forward-thinking approach for the next century.
**Reconstruction of Existing Hostels Alongside New Developments**
The DU Executive Council has also approved the construction of new hostels at an estimated cost of ₹4,027 crore, which will provide housing for an additional 15,758 students. Furthermore, plans to reconstruct two older hostels at a cost of around ₹1,862 crore were sanctioned, which will accommodate 6,137 students upon completion.
**New Hostel Locations and Name Retention**
In response to inquiries, Prof. Singh confirmed that the names of the existing hostels will remain unchanged after reconstruction. New multi-story hostel buildings will be established at the Dhaka Complex, Surajmal Vihar Campus, and Najafgarh Campus. Additionally, the reconstruction of Jubilee Hall and the PG Men's Hostel has been approved. Due to limited available land, each hostel block will be designed to maximize the permissible Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for each campus.
These new blocks will include essential amenities such as dining halls, shops, common areas, reading rooms, and residences for wardens, ensuring that the hostel complexes across the three campuses meet student needs.
**Hostels for Both Genders**
According to the EC's proposal, hostels for boys and girls will be constructed at Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura (Najafgarh), as well as at the West Campus in Dwarka and the East Campus in Surajmal Vihar, Karkardooma. The EC has also encouraged all colleges to draft proposals for new hostel constructions on their premises and submit them to the relevant funding agency.
