The long-awaited security enhancement project is finally moving forward, with the university approving a tender valued at around ₹9 crore (approximately $1.9 billion). This initiative will see the installation of over 700 new CCTV cameras across the North, South, East, and West Campuses. This means that whether students are leaving the library late at night or hanging out in the canteen, every area will be monitored.

Current CCTV Situation

Current Status:
At present, the CCTV coverage on the expansive DU campus is inadequate. Only 25 cameras are operational on the 198-acre North Campus, primarily around the Arts Faculty, Central Library, and Proctor's Office. The South Campus, which covers 64 acres, has just 60 cameras, with plans for around 100 additional units. Many open areas, streets, parking lots, and entrances remain poorly lit and unmonitored. During the recent DUSU elections, the Delhi Police temporarily set up 30 cameras, but these were removed post-elections. The existing cameras have been malfunctioning for years.

Need for Enhanced Surveillance

Incidents Prompting Action:
In light of several incidents on campus in recent years, the DU administration has prioritized the installation of new cameras. For instance, in 2024, the DUSU office was vandalized, and no footage was available to aid the investigation. A tragic murder of a student near the college in 2011 also highlighted the lack of surveillance, which stalled the investigation. Following the Red Fort blast, the university convened with Delhi Police and agreed that immediate action was necessary. Students have long expressed concerns about safety, and this initiative addresses those worries.

Replacement of Old Cameras:
The upcoming installation of over 700 cameras will replace outdated and non-functional units while expanding coverage to new areas. Every street, parking lot, entrance, library vicinity, and canteen area will be monitored. This enhanced surveillance aims to deter harassment, theft, and suspicious activities, providing a safer environment for students, especially women who may feel anxious about being out alone at night. In the event of an incident, footage will be accessible within two minutes for investigations, strengthening the case with solid evidence.
