Delhi University Introduces GATE Scores for M.Tech Admissions
New Admission Policy at Delhi University
In a groundbreaking move, Delhi University has announced that it will now prioritize GATE scores for admissions into its M.Tech programs. This marks a significant shift in the university's admission strategy, as GATE scores were previously utilized mainly by IITs, NITs, and similar institutions.
The university has reassured students without GATE scores that they still have a chance for admission. If there are unfilled seats after the GATE-based admissions, the remaining spots will be allocated based on the CUET-PG merit list, providing new opportunities for many engineering aspirants.
Historical Shift in Admission Criteria
This is the first instance where GATE scores will be prioritized for a postgraduate program at Delhi University. Haneet Gandhi, the Dean of Admissions, noted that while GATE scores were previously limited to PhD admissions, they will now also be applicable for M.Tech courses. The university will first compile a merit list based on valid GATE scores before proceeding with seat allocations.
Approval from AICTE
The M.Tech program itself is not new; however, it has recently received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). This approval has led to the integration of GATE scores into the admission process, which is expected to improve the quality of the program and increase competition among applicants.
Eligibility Criteria for Applicants
Candidates interested in applying must possess a B.Tech, B.E., B.Sc. (Engineering), M.Sc., or an equivalent degree in a relevant technical field. Eligible disciplines include Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, and Radio Physics and Electronics Engineering. Degrees must be obtained from recognized institutions.
Seat Allocation Details
Delhi University has designated a total of 30 seats for the M.Tech program. The distribution is as follows:
| Category | Number of Seats |
|---|---|
| General | 13 |
| OBC | 8 |
| SC | 4 |
| ST | 2 |
| EWS | 3 |
Admissions will be strictly merit-based across all categories.
Opportunities for CUET-PG Candidates
Students who have qualified for the CUET-PG examination are also eligible to apply. However, priority will be given to those with valid GATE scores during the seat allocation process. If any seats remain unfilled, they will be filled based on the merit of CUET-PG candidates from the 2026-27 cycle, ensuring that non-GATE candidates still have a chance for admission.
Separate Admission Portal
It is important to note that admissions for this M.Tech program will not be processed through the CSAS-PG portal, which is typically used for standard PG admissions. Instead, a dedicated portal will be launched specifically for this M.Tech course, allowing interested candidates to submit their applications in a manner tailored to the program's requirements.
