Delhi University History Syllabus Faces Backlash Over Exclusions

A recent revision of the postgraduate history syllabus at Delhi University has ignited controversy due to the exclusion of significant topics, particularly those related to the Delhi Sultanate and North Indian history. Controversy Surrounds New History Curriculum

A significant uproar has emerged regarding the revised syllabus for the postgraduate history program at Delhi University (DU). Notably, several essential topics concerning medieval Indian history have been omitted. Among these is a vital paper on the Delhi Sultanate, which has traditionally aided students in grasping the complexities of power, governance, and societal changes during medieval North India.

Moreover, another paper focused on North Indian history has also been excluded from the finalized third-semester syllabus. A number of additional papers suggested by the department were similarly left out.

Key Paper on Delhi Sultanate Excluded

The course titled "The Delhi Sultanate: Structures of Authority in Medieval North India," which was previously part of the third-semester curriculum, has been removed from the new syllabus. This paper explored the development of state structures, authority dynamics, and the political and social evolution in medieval India.

Additionally, the paper covering the History of North India (1400–1550) is absent from the final syllabus. A faculty member from the History Department emphasized that the Delhi Sultanate paper has been a fundamental aspect of medieval Indian history education for many years.

Limited Papers Retained in Final Syllabus

The new syllabus not only omits topics related to medieval history but also excludes several papers on ancient Indian history. These omitted subjects include gender and women's history in ancient India, political systems, and the interplay of religion and society in ancient texts.

Reports indicate that the History Department proposed a total of 38 Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) papers, yet only 16 made it to the final third-semester syllabus. Documentation reveals that while many subjects had passed the syllabus approval stage, they were ultimately excluded from the final announcement made on August 7. Some papers are still under review or pending discussion. A professor highlighted that the postgraduate-level study of the Delhi Sultanate and North India differs significantly from undergraduate courses, focusing on more specialized content.
