CBSE Introduces Mandatory APAAR ID for Board Exam Registration

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated the use of APAAR ID for students registering for board exams starting in the 2026-27 academic year. This unique 12-digit ID will ensure that students' academic records are securely maintained. The decision follows a low registration rate for the ID, which is designed to streamline the educational process and align with national education goals. Students can obtain their APAAR ID through their schools or online platforms. This change aims to enhance the digital security of academic records and reduce fraudulent certificates. New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major change for students. Starting from the academic year 2026-27, it will be mandatory for students to possess an APAAR ID during the registration for board examinations. Without this ID, students will not be able to fill out their exam forms. This decision was made in a recent meeting of the CBSE governing body, which noted that less than 50% of students had obtained an APAAR ID by the end of the 2025-26 academic session. The move aims to strengthen the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and the Digital India initiative.


What is APAAR ID?

APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. It is also referred to as 'One Nation, One Student ID'. This unique 12-digit number will be assigned to each student for their lifetime, ensuring that their entire academic record is securely stored in one place.

- Easy transfer when changing schools


- Sports, scholarships, and other achievements


Students will be able to download their mark sheets or certificates with just one click. This will also help reduce the issue of fake certificates and make record tracking simpler.


Why is it Mandatory?

Initially optional, the slow adoption rate led CBSE to make it compulsory. Now, students from grades 9 to 12 will need to provide this ID during registration and while filling out the List of Candidates (LOC). Some states previously faced issues with data and consent, but the board will now assist schools in this process.


How to Obtain APAAR ID?

Students can create their ID in two ways:


- Through the school: Contact your school. Parents will need to fill out a consent form, and the school will generate the ID via the UDISE+ portal. This is the easiest method.


- Online: Visit the DigiLocker app or website. Create an account using your Aadhaar card and linked mobile number, or complete the process on the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) portal.


Important advice: Ensure to obtain the ID promptly to avoid any issues during exam registration. Verify that details like name and date of birth in Aadhaar are correct, as errors may lead to problems with the ID.
