The Bihar government offers a variety of scholarship and financial aid programs aimed at supporting students. This article outlines the available schemes and the financial support they provide.
These initiatives cover a wide range of educational needs, from school to college and even preparation for competitive exams. Special provisions exist for girls and students from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Backward Classes (BC), Extremely Backward Classes (EBC), and minority groups.
Support for Girls' Education
Unmarried girls who complete Class 12 are eligible for a one-time financial grant through the Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana, aimed at promoting further education. Additionally, female graduates from recognized universities in Bihar can receive financial support ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 under the Mukhyamantri Balika (Graduation) Protsahan Yojana.
Post-Matric Scholarship for SC, ST, BC, and EBC Students
Students from SC, ST, BC, or EBC backgrounds pursuing higher education after Class 10 can benefit from the Post-Matric Scholarship (PMS). This scheme facilitates the direct transfer of education-related expenses and allowances to students' bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Moreover, SC and ST students living in Dr. Ambedkar Welfare Hostels receive monthly financial aid of up to ₹2,000.
Student Credit Card Scheme
The Bihar Student Credit Card Scheme is designed to assist students worried about the costs of higher education. The government offers education loans up to ₹4 lakh, with a 4% interest rate for general category students. Female students and those with disabilities can access this loan at a significantly lower interest rate of just 1%.
Support for Competitive Exam Preparation
The Bihar government also provides assistance to students preparing for competitive exams. Under the Chief Minister’s Civil Services Incentive Scheme for EBCs, candidates from this category who clear preliminary stages of exams like UPSC, BPSC, NDA, CDS, and banking tests receive one-time financial support ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹1 lakh.
Incentives for Minority Students
Specific schemes are available for minority students as well. The Chief Minister’s Student Incentive Scheme offers ₹10,000 to minority students who achieve first division in their matriculation exams. Additionally, those residing in recognized minority hostels receive monthly financial support through the Minority Hostel Grant Scheme.
