Yesterday, Haryana CM Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that the city of Gurgaon will be renamed as Gurgram after a proposal is passed with the cabinet. This came as a surprise to everyone but city residents knew that this process was going for a long time. While this decision is not yet implemented but there were a series of remarks on the social networking that will not stop you laughing!

Gurgaon to be named on the Guru Dronacharya

Gurgaon is said to be the ancestral village of the Mahabharata legend and instructor of the Pandavas and the Kauravas. He was also a legendary archer and holds a special place in the Indian Culture.

“Most of us feel the city should be renamed Gurugram to emphasise the fact that this is where Guru Dronacharya used to live. Not many people are aware of it and there is nothing wrong in renaming it,” said the members of the renaming committee.

Development of the Committee to rename Gurgaon

Since 2012, there have been plans to change the name of the city by the Municipal Corporation. A committee was formed for that.

Gurgaon Mayor Vimal Yadav, who was part of the committee that recommended the name change to the CM.

On this occasion, he said to the press, “Most of us feel the city should be renamed Gurugram to emphasise the fact that this is where Guru Dronacharya used to live. Not many people are aware of it and there is nothing wrong in renaming it.”

Mewat to be named Nuh

Along with the proposal of the renaming of Haryana, Mewat is also included in the proposal. Mewat is asked to be renamed as Nuh. This decision will also be considered in the upcoming Cabinet meeting.

Though Khattar has given in-principle approval for the changes, the decision will now be placed before the Haryana cabinet before it is sent to the union government.

Renaming the city has a lot of problems as all the legal and official documents have to be remade and some physical things that contain the name of the city have to be redeveloped. However, the city officials said that it will not create troubles for anyone.

The Mayor, Vimal Yadav said “Corporation officials will be asked to change the name from Gurgaon to Gurugram in all revenue and registry records. All the records are available online and the entire process of changing the name will take about three months.”

Corporate sector is a little concerned about the renaming the city. According to reports, some corporate giants think that renaming the city may bring problems in investments from other places and also degrade the ‘Brand Name’ of the city.

One official of an MNC stated that the move is confusing as the new name sounds so medieval that new talents will not be lured to be working in the city. He also expressed concerns that consequently it will affect the city’s ability to attract investments.

Political leaders of BJP have welcomed the move of changing the name of the city to Gurugram. Umesh Agarwal, BJP MLA from Gurugram stated the mythology and said  “The demand to change the name to Gurugram has been on for the past 12 to14 years. This place never was Gurgaon. It always was Guru Gaon — village of the Guru. People distorted the name. Guru Dronacharya’s ashram was here — where Kauravas and Pandavas gained their gurukul. Mata Sheetla was his wife. We have a temple in her name in old Gurgaon.”
