25 December is recognised as Newtonmas Day, observed by some atheists to commemorate the birthday of Sir Issac Newton (Dec 25th, 1642). Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist and mathematician (described in his own day as a “natural philosopher”) who is widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time and as a key figure in the scientific revolution. Newton’s Principia formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation, which dominated scientists’ view of the physical universe for the next three centuries.

25 December, 1936: Ismail Merchant was an Indian-born film producer and director. Merchant succeeded as an independent producer in Hollywood for more than 40 years. His strength lay in funding his projects, particularly in his ability to produce films for several million dollars less than those of his contemporaries.
25 December, 1974: Nagma is an Indian actress. She is better known for her roles in Telugu and Tamil movies like Killer, Gharana Mogudu, Kadhalan, Baashha and many others. She began her acting career in Bollywood and acted in a few of the biggest Bollywood movies but shifted down south before returning to Mumbai and continuing films in other languages. Nagma has acted in a broad range of India’s languages: Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, and now Marathi.

25 December, 1765: Maharaja Suraj Mal or Sujan Singh was ruler of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, India. A contemporary historian has described him as “the Plato of the Jat people” and by a modern writer as the “Jat Odysseus”, because of his political sagacity, steady intellect and clear vision. There are claims that he caused two large silver doors at the entrance of the Taj Mahal to be stolen and melted down in 1764.
25 December, 1994: Gyani Zail Singh was the seventh President of India, serving from 1982 to 1987. Prior to his presidency, he was a politician with the Indian National Congress party, and had held several ministerial posts in the Union Cabinet, including that of Home Minister.His presidency was marked by Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He died of injuries in 1994 after a car accident.
25 December, 2014: Narayanan Lakshmi Balakrishnan, commonly known as N. L. Balakrishnan, was an Indian film still photographer and actor who worked in Malayalam cinema. He worked as a still photographer in about 170 films and has associated with great directors including G. Aravindan, John Abraham, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, P. Padmarajan, Bharathan and K. G. George. He was an actor, with 180 credits to his name, and has also worked as a photo journalist with Kerala Kaumudi.
