The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has recently opted to retract a Class 8 social science textbook named "Exploring Society: India and Beyond" and has issued a public apology regarding a contentious chapter. This action follows significant public outcry concerning the chapter titled "The Role of Judiciary in Our Society."


Controversial Chapter Details

The fourth chapter of the textbook addressed various issues confronting the judiciary, including corruption, an overwhelming backlog of cases, and a lack of judges, among other sensitive topics. This portrayal ignited discussions about the judiciary's integrity and led to widespread controversy.

In a press release, NCERT acknowledged that the chapter contained "inappropriate textual content and an authorization error," which was mistakenly included. The Supreme Court has taken notice of the situation, making strong statements that any material damaging the reputation of constitutional institutions like the judiciary is intolerable. The Court effectively prohibited the use of the book and mandated the retrieval of all copies, with a follow-up hearing set for March 11.
