Delhi University Introduces Groundbreaking Course on Navigating Relationships
Innovative Course Launch at Delhi University
Delhi University is set to pioneer a unique initiative by offering a course aimed at helping Gen Z identify relationship red flags, manage emotions, and cope with heartbreak. This new elective, titled 'Negotiating Intimate Relationships,' will commence in the academic year 2025-26.
The course, which will be available to students from all disciplines, is a four-credit general elective offered by the Department of Psychology. It seeks to encourage open discussions about friendship, romance, rejection, jealousy, and breakups.
Motivation Behind the Course
The introduction of this course comes in response to a troubling rise in crimes involving young individuals and their intimate partners, often stemming from toxic relationships and online monitoring.
In a shocking two-week period in May and June 2025, Delhi experienced the tragic murders of three young women—Komal (21), Vijaylaxmi (19), and Mehek Jain (18)—allegedly at the hands of partners driven by jealousy and emotional instability.
These incidents highlight a pressing concern regarding emotional maturity and the absence of early education on establishing healthy boundaries in relationships.
Experts suggest that these violent acts are not isolated but rather indicative of deeper emotional challenges exacerbated by social media and a lack of guidance.
A psychologist from DU emphasized the importance of early emotional education, warning that without it, the cycle of violence may continue.
Course Structure and Content
The curriculum is organized into four main units, each addressing different aspects and complexities of relationships:
Unit 1: The Psychology of Friendships & Intimacy - Examines how casual friendships can develop into deeper romantic connections.
Unit 2: Theories of Love & Sexuality - Covers concepts such as Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love and the Two-Factor Theory.
Unit 3: Recognising Toxic Patterns - Focuses on identifying red flags, managing jealousy, understanding breakup signals, and recognizing intimate partner violence.
Unit 4: Building Healthy Relationships - Discusses boundary-setting, emotional resilience, mutual respect, and effective communication.
Students will participate in three lectures and one tutorial each week, emphasizing interactive learning through activities such as:
- Analyzing social media habits
- Exercises on break-ups and setting boundaries
- Debates on online dating experiences
- Discussions on pop culture references like 'Kabir Singh' and 'Titanic'
- Guiding Gen Z on emotional awareness and coping strategies
Latika Gupta, a faculty member at DU, stated that the goal is to foster discussions about love, rejection, and emotional health within the classroom, allowing students to reflect and grow.
She noted, 'No one teaches how to handle rejection or set boundaries. Early education in these areas could prevent some tragedies.'
Beyond Traditional Education
This course distinguishes itself by addressing the real-life emotional hurdles faced by Gen Z in an era dominated by dating apps, social media, and constant online scrutiny.
Delhi University aspires that through increased awareness and structured dialogue, students will cultivate healthier relational dynamics, not only in romantic contexts but also in their emotional and social interactions.
In a climate where minor misunderstandings can lead to severe consequences, imparting emotional literacy may prove to be one of the most crucial forms of education.
While this course may not resolve every relationship issue, it has the potential to save lives.
