Revamping School Curriculum: AI Education Set to Launch Nationwide by 2027
Introduction to AI Education in Schools
The influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being recognized globally, prompting the Union Ministry of Education to integrate AI into the school curriculum. To enhance this initiative, the Ministry is working on updating the AI syllabus, which is expected to be rolled out in schools nationwide by 2027. A dedicated 16-member committee from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will be responsible for developing this new syllabus. The introduction of AI education will commence for students starting from grade three in 2026.
Details of the New AI Syllabus for Higher Grades
The Union Ministry of Education is set to introduce a new AI syllabus for students in grades 11 and 12, effective from 2027. Currently, AI is part of the curriculum for grades 9 to 12, a structure that will remain in place until the 2026-27 academic year. Following this, the new syllabus will be applicable to 11th and 12th graders, meaning that students in 12th grade will take their board exams based on this updated syllabus in 2029.
Curriculum Development by NCERT
The new AI syllabus is being crafted by a specialized 16-member committee known as the Textbook Development Team from NCERT. This team is expected to finalize the curriculum by the end of this year, paving the way for its implementation in the 2027-28 academic session.
Expansion of AI Education from Grades 3 to 8
The Union Ministry of Education is also planning to broaden the scope of AI education for students in grades 3 to 8, with implementation scheduled for the 2026-27 academic year. Recent discussions between officials from the Ministry and the CBSE have focused on this expansion.
