The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has unveiled a fresh social science textbook for Class 9, titled *Understanding Society: India and Beyond*, which is set for the 2026-27 academic year.


Focus on Special Intensive Revision (SIR)

This new textbook elaborates on the concept of Special Intensive Revision (SIR), detailing its significance and the rationale behind its implementation. It emphasizes the impartial role of the Election Commission in the electoral process.


Dedicated Chapter on SIR

A specific chapter on SIR has been incorporated, outlining its main goals, which include updating the electoral roll, verifying voter identities, and correcting inaccuracies in the voter list. This chapter aims to enhance students' understanding of how reviewing the electoral roll can fortify the electoral framework.


Understanding Coalition Politics

An interactive section has been designed to aid Class 9 students in grasping the concept of coalition politics. Students are encouraged to identify the coalitions that governed after the elections held in 1977, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, 2019, and 2024.


Insights on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs)

The textbook also includes extensive information regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs). Students will gain insights into the various phases of the electoral process and the operation of democratic institutions.
