Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti: Public Holiday Announced for October 7, 2025
Celebration of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti
On October 7, 2025, both Uttar Pradesh and Delhi will observe a public holiday in honor of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti. This day will see the closure of all government and private educational institutions, with various grand celebrations planned nationwide.
Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated annually on the full moon day of Ashwin, commemorating the legacy of Maharishi Valmiki, the first poet known for his epic, the Ramayana. He is revered not only as the father of Sanskrit literature but also as a promoter of humanity, morality, and religious values through his writings.
This year, the auspicious occasion falls on a Tuesday, and it will be celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm throughout the country. Both the Uttar Pradesh and Delhi administrations have officially declared this day as a public holiday.
Public Holiday in Uttar Pradesh
The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Yogi Adityanath, has announced a statewide public holiday on October 7 to honor Maharishi Valmiki's birth anniversary. A government order specifies that all government offices, private institutions, schools, colleges, and universities will be closed on this day.
Valmiki Jayanti was previously included in the annual holiday schedule released by the government in December 2024, and this recent order formalizes that declaration.
In celebration of Valmiki Jayanti, numerous events will take place in various cities across Uttar Pradesh. Major cities such as Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Kanpur will host processions, cultural events, and tableaus. Additionally, special campaigns will be initiated to educate the public about Maharishi Valmiki's life and teachings.
Delhi's Observance of the Holiday
In a similar vein, the Delhi government has also declared October 7 as a public holiday to celebrate Maharishi Valmiki's birth anniversary. This announcement was made by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta last Sunday.
On this occasion, all schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Delhi will be closed, along with government and municipal offices. The capital will witness processions, bhajan evenings, and various cultural programs to honor Maharishi Valmiki. Temples and community centers dedicated to Valmiki in Delhi are being adorned, and devotees are expected to gather in large numbers.
