CBSE Class 10 Exam Update: New Structure and Skill Subject Options
Key Changes for CBSE Class 10 Examinations
Students currently enrolled in Class 9 under the CBSE board should take note of significant updates regarding the 2028 Class 10 board exams. These exams will require students to take five mandatory subjects (standard papers), with the option to select an additional skill-based subject. This extra subject may serve as a valuable resource if a student does not pass in Mathematics, Science, or Social Science.
CBSE Board's New Examination Framework
In a recent announcement, the CBSE clarified the new examination structure, introducing two options for vocational education. Students can opt for either a 'school-based assessment' or a board examination that culminates in a 'nationally recognized skill certificate.' This applies to those in Class 9 during the 2026-27 academic year, who will take their Class 10 board exams in 2028.
Extension of Nandan Nilekani Task Force
The Central Government has decided to prolong the tenure of the examination reform task force led by Nandan Nilekani until January 2027. Prior to finalizing its recommendations, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) plans to engage in discussions with Chief Ministers and Chief Secretaries. This six-member committee was established to enhance transparency in the examination process following the NEET-UG controversy.
The task force aims to allocate examination responsibilities to various agencies, set up secure, government-regulated testing centers in each district, and develop a 'common exam calendar' for organizations like the NTA, SSC, and IBPS to avoid scheduling conflicts.
