The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) recently declared the results of the Uccha Madhyamik or Class 12 examinations for the year 2023. This announcement revealed that 89.25 percent of the students who appeared for the exams have successfully cleared them. Among the successful candidates were a remarkable mother-son duo from Shantipur, West Bengal, who performed exceptionally well. Interestingly, the mother outperformed her son by a margin of 40 marks. While the son secured 284 marks, the mother achieved an impressive score of 324.

Latika Mandal, a 38-year-old resident of Narsinghpur's new Sardarpara in the Shantipur police station area, married Asim Mandal two decades ago. Having hailed from Dhubulia, Latika had to discontinue her studies after completing Class 6 due to financial constraints faced by her family. Nevertheless, her passion for learning never wavered. Despite her responsibilities of managing the household and raising children, she found solace in books and reading. With the assistance of a neighbor, Latika enrolled in Rabindra Mukta Vidyalaya, determined to continue her education.

In 2020, she successfully passed the Madhayamik examination (Class 10) with commendable results, along with her daughter. The following year, her son also cleared the secondary school exams. In 2021, Latika secured admission to Narsinghpur High School in Class 11, pursuing the Arts stream. Her son, Sourav, is currently a student at Kalna Maharaja High School in East Bardhaman. This year, both of them triumphantly cleared the higher secondary examination in the Arts stream.

Residing in Narsinghpur's new Sardarpara in the Shantipur police station area, Latika and her son Sourav have emerged as noteworthy candidates despite attending different schools. Looking ahead, Latika aspires to pursue a degree in education, while Sourav intends to prepare for government jobs after completing his college education. However, Latika expressed her dissatisfaction with the published results, stating, "It would have been better if the results were reversed. If my son had performed slightly better, it would have benefited him in the future. What more can one expect at my age with these results?" Meanwhile, Sourav acknowledged the praise received by his mother, saying, "Everyone admires my mother's remarkable achievement. That's what makes my victory even more special!"
