Operation Sindhu: Safe Return of Indian Students Amidst Iran-Israel Tensions
Operation Sindhu Initiated by Indian Government
In response to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, the Indian government has launched 'Operation Sindhu' to safely evacuate Indian nationals stranded in the region. On Wednesday, 110 Indian students were successfully brought back from northern Iran. Upon their arrival at Delhi Airport, the students expressed gratitude towards the Indian government and the Ministry of External Affairs, while also voicing their dissatisfaction with the Jammu and Kashmir government.
Safe Return from Iran to Delhi
The Ministry of External Affairs reported that the Indian embassy in Tehran maintained constant communication with the students in northern Iran and initiated their evacuation process in a timely manner. The local administration, the Indian embassy, and the airlines played crucial roles in this operation. A special flight was arranged to bring the students to Delhi under Operation Sindhu. The students shared with the media, "The Indian government supported us at every step, ensuring our needs for food, accommodation, and safety were met. We are extremely grateful."
Exhausting Bus Journey from Delhi to Kashmir
After arriving in Delhi, the students were primarily concerned about their journey to Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir government had previously assured them that arrangements would be made for their travel from Delhi to Kashmir. However, the students were shocked upon seeing the buses. One Kashmiri student remarked, "The government made promises, but..." They expressed frustration over the expectation of another 20-hour bus journey in old and uncomfortable buses, stating, "This is unfair to us, especially after the exhausting journey we just completed."
Concerns Over Bus Conditions
Students raised concerns regarding the condition of the buses provided by the Jammu and Kashmir administration. Many noted that the buses lacked adequate space and comfortable seating for a long journey.
Feeling Misunderstood
One student expressed, "It feels like our situation has not been understood at all. We are still in shock from what happened in Iran. While we felt some relief upon reaching India, this bus journey is ruining it all."
Appreciation for the Ministry of External Affairs
Despite their grievances, the students repeatedly acknowledged that the Indian government and the Ministry of External Affairs did not leave any stone unturned during their evacuation. The embassy was in constant contact, ensuring their safety and comfort. According to sources from the Ministry of External Affairs, "Every Indian citizen's life is precious to us. We are continuously monitoring the situation and will continue evacuation efforts if necessary."
Disappointment with Jammu and Kashmir Administration
A source from the Ministry of External Affairs, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, "After an evacuation operation, states are instructed to ensure citizens are safely returned home. The Jammu and Kashmir government was given this responsibility, but the arrangements made do not meet the students' expectations or the seriousness of the situation."
India's Diplomacy Amidst Rising Threats in the Middle East
The ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel are having global repercussions, and India is not exempt, given the large number of Indian nationals residing in the Middle East. 'Operation Sindhu' exemplifies India's commitment to a 'citizens first' policy. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar tweeted, "The safety of Indian citizens is our top priority. Bringing students back from Iran is a testament to our diplomatic and humanitarian commitment."
Public Demand for Accountability
Following the viral spread of videos and statements from the students on social media, criticism of the Jammu and Kashmir administration has intensified. People are questioning why, while the Ministry of External Affairs fulfilled its duties effectively, the state government fell short.
