NCERT Introduces AI and Computational Thinking Curriculum for High School Students
Innovative Educational Initiative by NCERT
In a bid to modernize teaching methods in schools, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched a new initiative. Under the Ministry of Education, NCERT has developed an initial module focused on computational thinking and artificial intelligence (AI) for students in grades 9 to 12. The aim is to foster logical reasoning, creativity, and problem-solving skills among students.
Aligning with National Education Policy
This module, designed in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, will provide students with a foundational understanding of AI. Notably, prior knowledge of computer programming or AI is not a prerequisite for learning this module.
Emphasis on Logical Thinking and Problem Solving
According to NCERT, the module explains computational thinking as the process of identifying problems, breaking them down into smaller parts, and systematically finding solutions.
This approach will enable students to think logically about everyday challenges. Additionally, they will learn how AI functions and where it is applied in daily life.
The module places a strong emphasis on developing skills such as critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and understanding new technologies.
Activities Without Computers and Internet
To make the module practical and engaging, an activity-based teaching approach has been adopted. This includes group discussions, experiments, practice sessions, and self-reflection activities.
Considering the lack of digital resources, activities have been designed to be conducted with or without computers and other digital tools. This ensures that students in schools with limited access to computers and the internet can also benefit.
Learning to Verify AI-Generated Information
A crucial aspect of the module focuses on the safe and responsible use of AI. Students will be educated about digital security, privacy of personal information, and recognizing misinformation spread online.
They will learn that not all information generated by AI is accurate, emphasizing the importance of verifying facts, accuracy, and reliability before trusting any content.
Moreover, the role of fairness, ethical responsibility, and human judgment in the use of AI will also be explained.
Preparing Students for Future Technologies
The application of artificial intelligence is increasing in education, healthcare, business, and other sectors. Thus, providing students with a basic understanding of AI at the school level can help familiarize them with future technologies.
The goal of NCERT's initiative is not only to introduce students to new technologies but also to prepare them to assess, use responsibly, and make decisions based on their understanding.
