The Gujarat Education Department has slightly increased the cost of ingredients for the midday meal program. According to a report from The Times of India, the state education department has increased the cost of midday meals for Class 1 to Class 5 by 48 paise per meal and for Class 6 to Class 8 by 72 paise.

The decision to raise the cost came after primary schools across the state requested the increase. However, the midday meal workers association expressed disappointment, stating that the increment was much lower than what they had demanded. Sources in the state education department revealed that the central government had ordered them to increase the price paid for midday meals, which led to the announcement of the increase. Under the midday meal scheme, every child in primary and upper primary sections of government and government-aided schools across Gujarat receives a midday meal.

In March of this year, the state legislature was informed that Gujarat had recorded almost a 10 percent decline in the amount spent on the midday meal scheme in 2022. The Gujarat government did not mention any reason for the fall in overall expenses.
