Due to the ongoing tense situation in Manipur, the state government has issued an order to extend the suspension of regular classes in all schools. According to the official notice, schools will remain closed until July 8 or until further instructions are given. The notice states, "The resumption of normal classes for all schools in the state, as stated in the order dated 19-06-2023, will be postponed until 08-07-2023 or until further notice, whichever comes first." The notice also directs the officers from the Department of Education-Schools, Manipur to take appropriate measures, stating, "All Zonal Education officers under the Department of Education-Schools, Manipur are hereby instructed to inform all concerned parties and take necessary actions accordingly."

Manipur is home to a total of 4,617 schools, with approximately 100 of them being used as relief camps for displaced persons or accommodations for central forces. The state police reported on Friday that certain areas are still experiencing tension, with sporadic incidents of gunfire occurring within the past 24 hours. However, news agency ANI has indicated that the situation in Manipur's districts is generally stable and returning to normal.

A previous incident on May 3 involved clashes during a protest rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU). The demonstration was in opposition to the inclusion of Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. In response to the violence, Manipur's Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, recently announced free admission to government schools for students affected by the unrest. The official notification states that the Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) must appoint a Nodal Officer for each relief camp, responsible for facilitating the admission process of affected students to the nearest suitable school. This measure aims to remove barriers to admission and make it easier for affected students to transfer schools. The government has also waived the fees associated with updating registration with BOSEM/COHSEM, particularly for cases involving school transfers.
