During the 55th meeting of the IIT Council, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the need for zero tolerance towards discrimination in all forms at premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Pradhan also highlighted the importance of providing adequate support to students and ensuring their mental health and wellness.

The council agreed to implement a robust grievance redressal system, increase psychological counselling services, and reduce pressure to alleviate fear of failure and rejection among students. Additionally, the council resolved to enhance support for students belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities and increase the tenure of support for women PhD scholars by an additional year.

This marks the first IIT Council meeting chaired by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and the council's members include directors and chairpersons of all 23 IITs. The meeting was held after a gap of two years, with the last meeting being held virtually in February 2021 due to the pandemic.
