According to police, a third-year Electrical Engineering student, who was an 18-year-old polytechnic student, was discovered deceased in her hostel room on the college campus in the Korei police station area of Odisha's Jajpur district on Tuesday. The young woman's body was found hanging from the ceiling fan. The incident caused unrest on the campus, as the family of the deceased accused the college administration of being responsible for her death, claiming that she was compelled to take her own life due to persistent ragging.

The mother of the deceased alleged that a male student from the college had messaged her daughter, informing her that she had been chosen for campus placement, but threatened that she would not be allowed to participate. According to the mother, her daughter was so afraid that she informed them that she would no longer reside in the hostel. Additionally, another student had reportedly attempted to assault her the day before. The mother stated that her daughter had refrained from informing the college authorities for fear of retaliation from the students involved.

The police sent the body for a post-mortem examination and initiated an investigation. Sanghamitra Mallick, the inspector in charge of Korei police station, stated that they were looking into the matter from every possible perspective.
