In a distressing incident that unfolded outside Aryabhatta College in Delhi University's South Campus, a first-year student lost his life on Sunday. The victim, identified as 19-year-old Nikhil Chauhan, hailed from Paschim Vihar and was pursuing a BA (Hons) in Political Science from the School of Open Learning. According to the police, the unfortunate incident occurred when Nikhil intervened to protect his girlfriend from being harassed by another student.

The assailants, believed to be a group of four individuals on motorcycles, confronted Nikhil near the college gate. Allegedly, a confrontation ensued, resulting in the victim being stabbed in the chest. Upon receiving an emergency call from Charak Palika Hospital regarding Nikhil's admission with a stab wound, the police promptly arrived at the scene. Tragically, Nikhil was declared brought dead upon his arrival at the nearby hospital.

Initial investigations have revealed that the accused student, from the School of Open Learning, had previously misbehaved with Nikhil's girlfriend within the college premises approximately a week ago. Angered by Nikhil's objection to the harassment, the accused and his associates decided to seek revenge. On Sunday, around 12:30 PM, they confronted Nikhil outside Aryabhatta College, ultimately leading to the fatal stabbing.

According to a senior police officer, Nikhil had expressed his distress over the harassment his girlfriend faced. This resulted in a heated argument and physical altercation between Nikhil and the accused student, during which threats were exchanged. Motivated by vengeance, the accused student, aided by his friends, carried out the attack.

The police have identified the culprits and are examining CCTV footage from the crime scene to establish the sequence of events. Teams have been formed to apprehend the suspects, who were captured on CCTV cameras fleeing the scene on motorcycles. A case has been registered, and following post-mortem, the victim's body will be handed over to his grieving family.

Nikhil, who had two brothers and loving parents, also pursued part-time modeling and appeared in music videos. Anup Singh Lather, the Delhi University PRO, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of a young life just outside the institution where students aspire to learn and build their futures. Lather extended prayers for Nikhil's soul and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Chauhan family during this hour of immense sadness.

The incident prompted Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj to voice his concerns on Twitter, questioning the law and order situation in the city and directing his message to the Lieutenant Governor (L-G). Bharadwaj alleged that the fear of the law has diminished in Delhi, asserting that the Delhi Police is involved in filing false cases against political parties and protecting certain individuals. He called upon the L-G to take necessary action to address the situation.

It is important to note that the Lt. Governor holds authority over public order, land, and the police in the national capital. As investigations continue and efforts are made to bring the culprits to justice, this tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the need for heightened security and vigilance within educational institutions to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
