Delhi Guest Teachers to Receive Fixed Monthly Salaries: A New Proposal
Relief for Guest Teachers in Delhi Schools
Over 20,000 guest teachers working in Delhi's government schools have received encouraging news. The Directorate of Education in Delhi has drafted a proposal to revise the payment structure for guest teachers. This new plan aims to replace the current daily wage system with a fixed monthly salary.
If approved, this proposal could lead to an increase in the monthly remuneration for Post Graduate Teachers (PGT), Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT), and Primary Teachers (PRT).
Details of the Proposal
According to reports, the Directorate of Education has submitted the revised proposal, prepared on October 15, 2026, to the finance department of the Delhi government for approval. If sanctioned, the new payment structure is expected to come into effect on November 1, 2026. However, this remains a proposed arrangement, and the final decision will depend on the finance department's approval.
Proposed Salary Structure
Under the new system, guest teachers' salaries will be determined based on basic pay and a 60% Dearness Allowance (DA). This will ensure that teachers across different categories receive a fixed monthly amount.
- PGT Teachers: ₹76,160 per month
- TGT Teachers: ₹71,840 per month
- PRT Teachers: ₹56,640 per month
These figures are based on the proposed salary framework. The proposal does not include provisions for House Rent Allowance (HRA) or other additional benefits. Future changes in the Dearness Allowance may also impact these salaries.
Current Payment System
Currently, guest teachers in Delhi's government schools are compensated based on their attendance, with a daily wage of approximately ₹1,000. This means that absences or holidays can significantly affect their total earnings for the month.
The new system aims to provide a stable monthly income instead of daily payments, ensuring teachers have a more predictable financial situation.
Leave Policies
According to the proposed rules, guest teachers will be entitled to eight days of casual leave per financial year. These leaves must be utilized according to established guidelines, and any unused leave will not carry over to the next financial year.
Exceeding the allotted leave may result in deductions from the monthly salary based on daily rates, emphasizing the importance of adhering to attendance and leave policies.
Payment During Holidays
A significant aspect of this proposal is the payment structure during summer and winter breaks. Guest teachers who have been continuously employed just before the summer holidays may receive their fixed monthly salary during the break, subject to certain conditions.
Additionally, if teachers are required to assist with admission processes, extra classes, or other government duties during the holidays, provisions for additional payments are also included in the proposal.
Status of Guest Teachers
The implementation of a fixed monthly salary will not change the nature of guest teachers' appointments; they will continue to work on a contractual basis. This proposal does not grant them the legal right to be recognized as regular teachers.
According to the Directorate of Education, guest teachers are appointed based on approved vacant positions and perform teaching duties similar to regular teachers.
Reactions from Teacher Associations
Officials from the Guest Teachers Association and other educators have welcomed this initiative to increase salaries. They have expressed that the demand for a pay raise has been pending for a long time, and approval of this proposal could provide financial relief to thousands of teachers.
Teachers are now awaiting the finance department's decision from the Delhi government. If the proposal is approved, the new payment system could be implemented as scheduled, but teachers must wait for the final order.
