Key Changes in CBSE Board Exams for 2026: What Students Need to Know
Introduction to CBSE Board Exams
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to commence the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations on February 17. It is crucial for students to familiarize themselves with the changes implemented by the board in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Understanding the revised exam structure, eligibility criteria, and registration requirements is essential for students appearing for the 2026 board exams to avoid future complications.
Introduction of Two Attempts
One of the most significant reforms for 2026 is the introduction of a dual-attempt system for Class 10 students. The first attempt will be the mandatory board examination held in February.
For those wishing to improve their scores, a second optional attempt will be conducted in May 2026. The higher score from either attempt will be considered for the final result, providing students with greater flexibility and reducing pressure.
Changes in Exam Pattern
Additionally, CBSE has revised the exam format to emphasize application-based and analytical learning. Under the new structure, 50% of the question paper will consist of competency-based questions, such as case studies and real-life problem-solving. Objective-type questions will account for 20%, while the remaining 30% will include short and long structured response questions. This format will apply to both Class 10 and Class 12 examinations.
Strict Rules for Sectional Answers
Moreover, CBSE has implemented strict rules for sectional answers in certain subjects. In science, students must write their answers for biology, chemistry, and physics in their respective sections, while social science answers must align with subject-specific sections like history and geography. Answers written in incorrect sections will not be evaluated.
Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria have also been tightened. A minimum attendance of 75% is now mandatory, and internal assessments will contribute between 20% to 40% of the total marks, depending on the subject. Furthermore, all students must register through the Examination Sangam portal, where each candidate will receive a unique APAAR ID for digital academic tracking.
Exam Schedule
The Class 10 examinations will conclude on March 11, 2026, while the Class 12 exams will continue until April 10, 2026. All exams will be conducted in pen-and-paper (offline) mode at designated centers both in India and abroad.
